An interview with New Jersey' s death-penetrators, EX DEMENTIA
In a small town in New Jersey, a brain-penetrating sound has littered the air. It has already killed hundreds, and infected thousands! It's sonic-toxin drives you insane and forces you to kill! How many more will it kill?! Can it be stopped?! And how long will this go on?! We don't know. The only thing we do know is, what's causing it... EX DEMENTIA!
Some new details on the upcoming album "The Red Mass", future plans, and more are all discussed in the following interview with the drummer of the band Branden.
1.How did you come up with the name EX DEMENTIA and how does it fit with your
music?
Google "death metal band name generator".
2. So now you are in the studio for the recordings of your upcoming album "The Red Mass". Let us know some details about it.
We recently just got out of the studio. We're in the editing process at the moment. We've got our second mix as of now. We'll most likely go back for one last mix, to fix certain levels, and insert the guest vocal tracks. We have a bunch of killer appearances on this album. Chris Reifert (Autopsy/Abscess), Ross Sewage (Impaled), Parasitic Tim (Splatterhouse), and Admiral Nobeard (Swashbuckle). Some of the song titles are "Dead! Nude! Dancers!", "Liquid Flesh", "Mud and Blood" and more. And the sound on this album isn't overly different than "In The Chapters of Horror". The sound difference from "Thou Shall Repulse" to "In The Chapters of Horror" was pretty drastic. But we were really happy with how "In The Chapters of Horror" came out, so we wanted to capture that same sound.
3.Comparing with your older releases whats the strong point of this new album?
Well on this release, there are a few longer songs. There are still a few straight-to-the-point songs. But we figured why not throw in a couple of longer songs.
4.How would you describe your music to someone who has never listened to you?
It's like Menudo, if Ricky Martin had a chronic sore throat.
5.What were your influences for the creation of "The Red Mass"?
Well the main influence for this album was actually due to how well-recieved "In The Chapters of Horror" was. Once that came out, we got a lot of really positive feedback. I mean, unless you're Metallica, and just do another record just for more money, you really have to get a good response from your previous release to get motivated to do another one. At least, that's the way I feel.
6.What about the lyric topics of the new album? Why did you choose these kind of lyrics?
Well the title itself came from from reading The Exorcist. I remember when I read the book, they went more into The Black Mass ritual than they do in the movie. I always thought it would be cool to write a song around it. But not in a pro-Satanist way. Kinda' like making fun of it. So instead of singing about Satanists and a Black Mass, let's just have another cult, whose ritual is just feeding. And basically, the song is about a group of Satanists performing a Black Mass in the middle of the woods, when this other cult attacks them and guttles their bodies. And that's just the title track. The rest of the songs are conceived the same way on our previous releases. They're basically just inspired by horror films, or horror film ideas.
7. I see you are a three piece band. Are there any plans for any new members?
Please. Another member means another opinion.
8.How important is the band for your life?
Well, without this band, I wouldn't be typing to you from my 27.6 million dollar house on Mulholland Drive.(????)
9.How is the scene in your area? Could you recomend us some other great bands around there?
The scene? Oh wait, you mean that thing where people all like the same music? Yeah, it's so fucking awful over here, I must have blocked it out of my head. It's really bad. All it is is a hundred bands whose names all consist of over 6 words. And the most enjoyable thing about their music is the silence between breakdowns. At least we have Sinatra still. We still have him, right?
10.Are you a live band? Could you describe us a live show of EX DEMENTIA?
Yes, we are live band. But we haven't played in quite a while, due to writing and getting ready for the studio. Though, when the album is released, we will be doing a few shows in support of the new album. And our live show? Our live show consists of loud noises, blood and alcohol. So basically, it's no different than a woman on her period, drunk, at a bar.
11. Is EX DEMENTIA ready for a large scale European tour?
Oh we're ready. We just need to find the funds first.
12. Name some bands you would like to play with?
The ones who don't make fun of us after we play.
13. How do you imagine the band after 10 years?
I expect to have 3 greatest hits albums, and hopefully a tribute album, with the vocal tracks done by 2 children with down syndrome.
14. What's your other activities beside the band?
Well, we all work. But when we're not working, we just sit around, drink, and watch Lethal Weapon 2. That's basically it.
15. Tell to our readers a good reason to enter the music of EX DEMENTIA?
... Because we get your money if you like it.
16. What can we, the fans and listeners of EX DEMENTIA, expect from you in the future?
Hopefully a release a year. We didn't notice this until like last year, but since 2006 we've released something each year. The demo "An Excursion of Noise and Terror" was 2006. Our debut album "Thou Shall Repulse" was 2007. Our EP "In The Chapters of Horror" was last year, 2008. And this year, we've got "The Red Mass". And we've already got a few releases offered to us for 2010. So maybe by 2019, we'll actually have that greatest hits album.
