MASSACRE RECORDS 2010
Release: 27-07-2010
Origin: USA
Length: 38:34
After being slaughtered “alive” by brutal acts as General Surgery, Gorod, Cattle Decapitation and Origin this weekend, it is time for some easy listening music on Monday to overcome all this brutal violence. So what a surprise that the new Decrepit Birth is saying hi at the beginning of the new week: easy listening not at all, violent absolutely, but with lots of twisted melodies and structures.
And the time begins around 2001 when Decrepit was born to unleash brutal death metal upon mankind and humankind throughout the first years. After 2003 they were diminishing their creativity and extremity for a few years, before returning in 2008 with extreme brutal death metal from other worlds then ours. Happily after almost 2 years Decrepit Birth has returned with their third opus of technical death metal, this time on Massacre Records. When you just take a look at the current members and at all the former members, then we can conclude that we are dealing here with an entity, that is able to create, redefine and organise the chaos within this extreme genre.
After the first slaughtering by this polarity you feel weak, beaten and scarred. Once you have opened your eyes and ears and found the peace after a heavy weekend, also the beauty, melody and creativity are coming to the surface, leaving you impressed, healed and secured. Lately more bands are performing this at one hand very brutal, but on the other hand very technical and melodic style of death metal. Take for example The Faceless, Gorod, Obscura and off course Origin (Less melody, but still fucking brilliant also live!!!).
Here Decrepit is borrowing the unique way and style of Mr. Schuldiner’s Death to come up with excellent, extraordinary and well crafted riffs and structures, all drowned and smothered with a melodic approach reminding you of Cynic ideas and the twisted turns and hooks of the last Obscura record. Except from this technical side of the story, there is off course also much space for the brutal approach towards this style of music. Full blast drum patterns are fired at the listener in the best Suffocation and the earlier mentioned over the top Origin tradition; the only fact that this music has a more sweet taste is the overall production of this album by Zack Ohren. Very crystal clear, making it thinner than the brutal overall death metal productions, but layered with a sound-scape were all parts, instruments and brutal (but also a little monotonous) grunts are placed in perfect order.
To make this death metal album more than complete also the Dan Seagrave artwork is added once again and is a piece of art and deserves your special attention on vinyl. What would death metal be without this artist?
Bands like Obscura, Death and Decrepit kept and will always keep expanding the boundaries of brutal and technical death metal. I love it and hope you will also.
