Colossus - Interview

There are no translations available.

Colossus is an epic heavy metal band hailing from Raleigh, North Carolina.Their band name is influenced by a wonder of the ancient world, the Colossus erected over the harbor in the island of Rhodes, Greece. The band have released one full length album, "...And The Rift Of The Pan-Dimensional Undergods" (Nice Life Records 2008) and the ep "Drunk On Blood" (Nicelife Records 2009). Here we have got the change to speak with guitarist Bill Fisher and vocalist Sean Buchanan about the band and their plans.

1- Now your new ep "Drunk on blood" is out. Are you satisfied with it or is something could be better?

Bill-for the first time ever i think i'm completely satisfied with a record.  i hope to play better stuff on the next one, but for where we were as a band at that time, i think it represents us well.
Sean-- Yeah I agree with Bill. I'm really proud of it and can't wait to get started on the next one.

2- Unforynatelly i never heard of your debut, "...And The Rift Of The Pan-Dimensional Undergods". But could you tell us where is better comparing with your debut?

Sean--It was great to have enough material to do a full-length on RPDU, I think my only problem with DOB is that it could've been longer. As far as what we got on DOB I feel like everybody stepped up their game, better vocals, guitars and overall songwriting...

3- How do you describe your sound to someone who is not familiar with your band?

Sean--I think we coined the term "Adventure Metal" to describe our band.

4- Listening to your ep i find a lot of NWOBHM influences, especially some similarities with Heavy Load & Witchfynde. What do you think of it?

Bill- i think the nwobhm influence is impossible to deny, that was a strong time for rock.

5- In general whats your influences?

Bill-i'm influenced by all kinds of stuff these days, lots of rock, metal, video game, and soundtrack music especially.

6- By the way looking your band photos i see you are not use the classic image of a tradition heavy metal. I mean if i just have a look at a photo of you i think for an alternative or nu metal band. Whats your view about it?

Bill-my hair grows into an afro(this is a pain in the ass and probably wouldn't be considered very metal either).  other members who i will not mention do not have much hair to grow.  i wear glasses because i'm nearly blind, and spandex is not shall i say "flattering" to my physique.
Sean--We get this question alot and I usually answer that I find it doesn't matter much how a band looks, it's how they sound. I could honestly give a fuck how a band looks as long as they bring strong music.

7- Anyway i mention that your name is influenced by Rhodes Colossus (one of the worlds seven wonders). How did you came with this?  any greek man in the band?

Bill-nicky nixon, greek as hell.
Sean-Yeah Nicky is very Greek and he did name the band, but to me Colossus has always more described the overall feel of the band as far as what we want for our sound, stage prescence and future. And we do eat alot of gyros.

8- Its easy to understand that your lyric topics are quite epic...

Bill-kill more better is my lyrical contribution.  i read "world war z" by max brooks and holy shit, i highly recommend it.  imagine being surrounded by millions of zombies with a rifle and unlimited ammunition.  ooohhhh, man...  you gotta read that shit.
Sean-On this new one we have songs influenced by some of our favorite things, space mutants, zombies, cannibals. A Year Later (There's Still Meat Left in the Skull) is about one of the most crucially epic places in the real world, the bottom of the ocean. Basically real life monsters battling and destroying each other as we speak. And I got to sneak in a song about George R.R. Martin's series Song of Ice and Fire. Talk about epic...

9- How are you going to support you new ep?

Bill-tour as much as we are able.  we would love to come to europe, it seems you guys have a little more appreciation for this kind of music.

10- Really how could imagine a live show of Colossus?

Bill-you drink a lot, your face melts, it all seems very natural at the time.

11- How is the scene in N. Carolina? Could you recommend us some really cool bands?

Bill-caltrop is tearing up my town lately, what they do is very unusual and really huge.  raleigh nc has some good metal for sure, widow, praetorius, hellrazor.  hog is a great new band in a nearby town, look out for them.

12- So i know that you are going to enter the studio on January 2010 recording your second full length album. Give us some first impresions of the new tracks..

Bill-titles will have to remain a secret, since we have not decided them yet.  we've got a lot of work to do before we actually begin recording proper, but i will guess that fans of frank herbert's writing may be interested in this next one.

13- Ok thats all folks...last words are yours

Bill-rock out deutchland!! tag!
